The Promise and the Plan

We know how good God is. When we trust him as our personal savior he enters our life and we have the Holy Spirit and the promise of God. When disaster comes our way we think of the promise of God. Let us take as an example the life of Moses. From the time Moses left the burning bush, he listened to God, he was absolutely stunned about what he heard and what he saw. Moses left the burning bush fully committed to do exactly what God wanted him to do and in fact he did do it. Moses was to tell the pharaoh that  he was to let the people of Israel go. Well, instead of pharaoh listening to Moses, he doubled the work of the Israelite. Now Moses by doing so actually became the enemy of the Israelite, because pharaoh had doubled their responsibility in his retirements. Moses was sure that he did what God had said to him in the burning bush, but the outcome was not as Moses expected it to be. We have all had similar experiences in life. We also end up judging ourselves, condemnin...

How to be free from evil?

A man perpetrates a sin when he has pride of his own and a desire for sensual pleasure. Why does a man commit a sin even though he does not want to do so? Man commits a sin because he has a desire for sensual pleasures and accumulation of worldly wealth. As long as this desire continues, he will go on committing a sin. In spite of being careful he will commit an error. What is the method to root it out? The real method is penance from one's heart. The man who has committed the sin should first take oath never to commit such an error again and secondly stick to it. But if the man goes on committing sins after taking oath, he degrades himself. If the man sticks to the decision once taken, his inner sense will be purified. These two steps are very valuable to purify the inner sense and to root out sins.  It should be kept in mind that man was created in the image of God with God's own breath. So the man is not a sinner himself, but becomes a sinner by having affinity with se...

Learning Self-control

If we are not conscious of God at all times, we may be relieved for time being from the reactions of the sinful activities, but we will again commit transgressions. It is very clear that "repetitive transgressing and atoning are nothing but waste of time". Let us take an example of an elephant which cleanses his body thoroughly in a lake or a river, as soon as he comes onto the shore he takes dust and throws it all over his body and immediately become dirty again. Similarly, if one may cleanse himself in the process of atonement, if he again commits sinful acts, what is the use of atonement? So, How can one ultimately become free from all contamination brought about by the worldly nature? If one cannot achieve liberation, what is the use of atonement? One reason why many are struck in the cycle of sin and atonement and never realize any spiritual benefits is Ignorance. In the Book of Hosea, God feels sorry for Israel and says, My people are destroyed for lack of knowl...

The Fountain of Living Water

Lets read from the Book of Jeremiah for today's meditation, My people have committed two evils: They have abandoned Me, the fountain of living water, and they have carved out their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water. [Jeremiah 2:13] The Lord says He is the fountain of Living Water in our lives. But He is worried that we His people have abandoned Him. At many times we abandon the Lord and follow our own ways. Enjoyment of everlasting bliss is the ultimate goal of human existence, and God alone is the abode of everlasting bliss; God-realization and God-consciousness must be the sole objective of human life. On careful thought there is nothing so simple, easy and convenient as surrendering oneself to God and that is what He expects from us. Many of us waste our human life carving our broken cisterns such as money, respect, pride, pleasure that can never really help attain everlasting bliss. The Lord uses the illustration of a broken ciste...

How to Overcome Anger

We read in the Book of Psalms & Ecclesiastes, Refrain from anger abandon wrath;  Do not fret; it leads only to evil [Psalms 37:8 ] For anger dwells in the heart of fools [Ecclesiastes 7:9] How to refrain from Anger? Why does the Book of Ecclesiastes call an anger person a fool? How to overcome Anger? Let us first analyze how anger sprouts forth. The answer is simple, "Anger sprouts forth from Desire". People generally think desire means the wish to get more money, property and other riches. But we often forget a common desire people have, a desire that things should be their favor all the time. If their desire is not fulfilled they get angry. There is no gain in having such desire because people around you cannot always fulfill your desires as they too have certain ideas, conceptions, beliefs and desire which could be different from yours. If you want them to fulfill your desires, you should be prepared to fulfill their desires, otherwise what righ...

Mortal Life

In the Second Book of Samuel we read, “As for God, His way is blameless and perfect; The word of the Lord is tested. He is a shield to all those who take refuge and trust in Him"   [2-Sam 22:31] Seeking refuge in Him, He shall liberate us from all our sins. This world which seems to be ours cannot be with us forever. Even the great kings and emperors, who once were at the climax of glory have been devoured by death. Therefore, we should not waste our valuable human life which has been bestowed upon us by the grace of our God. We tend to seek refuge in money and comfort, but we must remember that these worldly things are perishable. So you will get nothing but deception. Since the worldly things which bring happiness are perishable, the worldly happiness is certainly perishable, while our God is imperishable.  So, we should have a clear aim for our daily life. Without an aim our life will be like a person who starts his journey without knowing where he wants ...
