Humble Submission to God

Make no great account of who may be for you or against you, but mind and take care that God may be with you in everything you do. Have a good conscience, and God will adequately defend you. For he whom God will help, no man's malice can hurt.  Remember the words of the prophet Jeremiah, Then said Jeremiah, "O Lord, my strength and my stronghold, and my refuge in the day of distress and need"... [Jeremiah 16:19a]  The psalmist sings in Psalm 16, “Keep me safe, my God, for in You I take refuge.” [Psalm 16:1] The psalmist sings in Psalm 119, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” [Psalm 119:105] Sometimes we struggle with dilemma while making tough decisions and life choices. It is always good to surrender ourselves to God and He will liberate us, since He is our only refuge at all times. It is for our good that we renounce dependence on mortal things as our refuge in times of distress. Surrender exclusively to God, our father. This excl...

A Perfect Heart

What is the characteristic of a "Perfect Heart"? Someone has a "Perfect Heart" when they love God with all their heart, soul, mind and strength and fully committed to Him. In the gospel of John, Jesus says, “If you really love Me, you will keep and obey My commandments." [John 14:15 AMP] This sounds more like a promise, If you really love Jesus, obedience will be the fruit of that love. Once you love Jesus with all your heart, it will no longer be a struggle between the flesh and the spirit. The love of Jesus will keep you away from the sinful nature of the flesh. As long as we are alive in this world we are going to handle temptation of sin. If you feed your spirit with the 'Word of God' consistently, realizing the love of God becomes easy. The Parable of the Sower we read about four kinds of soil, but it is really talking about four different conditions of heart in the real world. Knowing the Word of God and taking action on what your hear...

Self-Control, a gift of God's Wisdom

The desires of the senses are such that when we strive to quench them with fulfillment for a moment they seem to subside but then they come back with redoubled intensity. The sensual desires  are eliminated not by their fulfillment but by self-control. Self-control comes by making a firm decision at the time of temptation. It is a real struggle. In his letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul compares this process to that of an athlete. Every athlete who goes into training and competes in the games is disciplined and exercises self-control in all things. They do it to win a crown that withers, but we do it to receive an imperishable crown that does not wither. Therefore, I do not run without a definite goal; I do not flail around like one beating the air (shadow boxing). But I strictly discipline my body and make it my slave. [1 Corinthians 9:25-27] We have five senses in our body through which we experience the world around us. They are necessary, but if ...

Self-Confidence without Pride and Arrogance

Our beliefs must be based upon the truth that God is all powerful and ever-living and we are tiny speck of dust in the universe. This is the reality. We read the glory of God in the Book of Job, Job's reply to Bildad as follows, 7 “It is He who spreads out the north over emptiness And hangs the earth on nothing. 8 “He wraps the waters in His clouds [which otherwise would spill on earth all at once], And the cloud does not burst under them. 9 “He covers the face of the full moon And spreads His cloud over it. 10 “He has inscribed a circular limit (the horizon) on the face of the waters At the boundary between light and darkness. 11 “The pillars of the heavens tremble And are terrified at His rebuke. 12 “He stirred up the sea by His power, And by His understanding He smashed [proud] [c]Rahab. 13 “By His breath the heavens are cleared; His hand has pierced the [swiftly] fleeing serpent. 14 “Yet these are just the fringes of His ways, The faintest wh...

The Promise and the Plan

We know how good God is. When we trust him as our personal savior he enters our life and we have the Holy Spirit and the promise of God. When disaster comes our way we think of the promise of God. Let us take as an example the life of Moses. From the time Moses left the burning bush, he listened to God, he was absolutely stunned about what he heard and what he saw. Moses left the burning bush fully committed to do exactly what God wanted him to do and in fact he did do it. Moses was to tell the pharaoh that  he was to let the people of Israel go. Well, instead of pharaoh listening to Moses, he doubled the work of the Israelite. Now Moses by doing so actually became the enemy of the Israelite, because pharaoh had doubled their responsibility in his retirements. Moses was sure that he did what God had said to him in the burning bush, but the outcome was not as Moses expected it to be. We have all had similar experiences in life. We also end up judging ourselves, condemnin...

How to be free from evil?

A man perpetrates a sin when he has pride of his own and a desire for sensual pleasure. Why does a man commit a sin even though he does not want to do so? Man commits a sin because he has a desire for sensual pleasures and accumulation of worldly wealth. As long as this desire continues, he will go on committing a sin. In spite of being careful he will commit an error. What is the method to root it out? The real method is penance from one's heart. The man who has committed the sin should first take oath never to commit such an error again and secondly stick to it. But if the man goes on committing sins after taking oath, he degrades himself. If the man sticks to the decision once taken, his inner sense will be purified. These two steps are very valuable to purify the inner sense and to root out sins.  It should be kept in mind that man was created in the image of God with God's own breath. So the man is not a sinner himself, but becomes a sinner by having affinity with se...

Learning Self-control

If we are not conscious of God at all times, we may be relieved for time being from the reactions of the sinful activities, but we will again commit transgressions. It is very clear that "repetitive transgressing and atoning are nothing but waste of time". Let us take an example of an elephant which cleanses his body thoroughly in a lake or a river, as soon as he comes onto the shore he takes dust and throws it all over his body and immediately become dirty again. Similarly, if one may cleanse himself in the process of atonement, if he again commits sinful acts, what is the use of atonement? So, How can one ultimately become free from all contamination brought about by the worldly nature? If one cannot achieve liberation, what is the use of atonement? One reason why many are struck in the cycle of sin and atonement and never realize any spiritual benefits is Ignorance. In the Book of Hosea, God feels sorry for Israel and says, My people are destroyed for lack of knowl...
